On Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. three mystery writers will discuss and read from their work in the Main Library Periodical Room. They are Hallie Ephron, Richard Cass, and Sheila Connolly, moderated by Kate Flora. The event is free and open to all.
Curated by Kristin Anderson Emerson from a family archive of her father’s photographic work, the exhibition will be on display in the Art Gallery from September 4 - October 30, 2018.
All are invited to An Afternoon with Award-winning Lyric Poets Gail Mazur and Matt Miller on Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Periodical Room. This free event kicks off the 27th Season of the Poetry at the Library Series sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.
Pulitzer Prize winner Professor John T. Matteson will speak at the Main Library on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. about the enduring nature of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. This event is in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of the book. Free and open to all.
The 2018 Ruth Ratner Miller Award for Excellence in American History will be presented to Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize Winner and Professor of History at Harvard Law School and Harvard University on Saturday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Rotunda. Tickets are available at the Main Library and the Concord Bookshop. Adults $15, Students $5. Sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.
A public forum on the Library's expansion plans will take place on Thursday, October 18, from 6:00-7:00 p.m.. in the Concord Town House Hearing Room, at 22 Monument Street. Library Director Kerry Cronin and the Trustees will lead the forum. All are welcome.
A joint lecture by Joel Myerson, Carolina Distinguished Professor of American Literature, Emeritus, University of South Carolina and Daniel Shealy, Professor of English, University of North Carolina, Charlotte will take place on Saturday, October 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library. The annual Leslie Riedel Memorial Lecture for Young People will present children's author Kate DiCamillo on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Rotunda. The event is free and open to all. Registration is strongly recommended. Past speakers of the series include children's authors/illustrators David Macaulay, Chris Van Allsburg, Jerry Pinkney, Lois Lowry, Tomie dePaola, Grace Lin and Katherine Paterson. In the Main Street Entrance Foyer Exhibit Case, on display in September and October 2018, is The Spanish Influenza Pandemic in Concord (September-November 1918). The 1918 influenza pandemic, hastened by the dynamics of a world war, swept around the globe at alarming speed, leaving illness and death in its wake. Concord, in all its peaceful, small town charm, was not spared.
