Presence: An Exploration of Identity through Portraiture
On Saturday, April 29, 2017, you are invited to attend a gallery tour of Picturing Emerson: A Selection of Lifetime Portraits of Ralph Waldo Emerson with Curator Leslie Perrin Wilson at 10:00 a.m., followed at 11:00 by Presence: an Exploration of Identity through Portraiture, an illustrated talk by Meghan Murray, the Umbrella's current artist-in-residence.
Picturing Emerson exhibit is a selection of all known lifetime representations of Ralph Waldo Emerson and includes oil paintings, drawings, sculpture, and particularly photography. Curator Leslie Perrin Wilson will lead you through this visual chronology, expanding on the many images with facts, stories and anecdotes about America's first great public intellectual.
Meghan Murray, a recent graduate of Skidmore College, will discuss her experience as a portraitist, in particular her senior thesis, for which she created portraits of patients in an Alzheimer's unit, seeking to tell the stories of people whose lives have moved to another plane. In Meghan's words, "I challenged myself to capture the presence of each individual."
