Poetry at the Library: The Far North: Native Alaskan Joan Naviyuk Kane
On Sunday, November 3, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Library Periodical Room, multiple award-winning poet Joan Naviyuk Kane will read from and discuss her work that explores themes of adaptation and resilience, motherhood, marriage, extended family and its geographical context in her rapidly changing Arctic homeland. In an interview for the New York Times, Kane, who is Inupiaq with family from King Island and Mary’s Igloo, Alaska, stated: “We are losing so many of our elders, and we have just one or two remaining generations of people who grew up with the kind of specific cultural knowledge that gave rise to millennia of Arctic and sub-Arctic inhabitation. I don’t want my children or their children to encounter our culture only through anthropology. A lot of my work is written against loss.”
