23. The Middlesex Hotel in the Late 1860s
The Middlesex Hotel was still active in the late 1860s, when this photograph was taken. The coach conveyance in front of the building carried guests to and from the train station. The wagon to the left is a democrat, that in the center (near the coach) an express wagon, that rounding the corner to the right a milk wagon from the Smith farm on Strawberry Hill Road.
This photograph is a copy image made by late nineteenth century Concord photographer Alfred Munroe from an earlier original. The version shown here comes from one of about 800 Munroe glass plate negatives held by the Concord Free Public Library.
