24. Charles and Frances Rice Eaton, ca. 1854. From a daguerreotype, presented by Esther Howe Wheeler Anderson, 1981. In February of 1854, Frances (Fanny) Rice of Concord, daughter of William and Mary Rice, married clerk Charles H. Eaton (described in the Concord marriage record as a resident of Detroit at the time). Their daughter Fanny was born here the following January. Mrs. Eaton died in 1855, at the age of twenty-one, two months after her wedding anniversary and three months after the birth of her child. This photograph, probably taken around the time of the Eatons' wedding, freeze-frames a moment of hopeful expectancy in what turned out to be a brief shared life. |
