8. Card Stereograph of Town House
This 1875 card stereograph image shows the Town House as it looked in its first decades. In the nineteenth century, the stereograph was a great source of entertainment, and possessed documentary and souvenir value as well. Consisting of two images side-by-side on glass, metal, or paper (those on paper placed in paper frames or mounted on cardstock), stereographs were viewed through a special stereoscope, which created a three-dimensional effect. Mass-produced, commercially marketed series of stereographs became popular beginning in the late 1860s.
