Concord in the 1889 Walker Middlesex Atlas

33. Concord in the 1889 Walker Middlesex Atlas

The George H. Walker Company and its successors published a number of Massachusetts atlases in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This detail comes from the map “Part of Concord” (showing Concord Center and the surrounding area) in Atlas of Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Compiled from Recent and Actual Surveys and Records Under the Direction of the Publishers (Boston: Geo. H. Walker and Co., 1889). The footprint (including the jog) of the vacant Middlesex Hotel and that of its relatively new neighbor the Union Block on Main Street are shown. The map contains no evidence to suggest that the stable of the Middlesex was rebuilt between the fire of 1881 and the closing of the place.
