4. Cyrus Hubbard’s Survey of Concord Mill Dam Company Land, 1834
Farmer Cyrus Hubbard (1792-1865) came from a family that had occupied land in Concord for generations. Remembered as a simple man, only once in his life did he journey away from the Concord area, making a trip on horseback to Bangor, Maine. In addition to farming, he was also a respected surveyor. In Hubbard’s Social Circle memoir, Rebecca Wetherbee recalled that he practiced surveying throughout his life. Continually working to perfect his skills, his surveys were trusted for their accuracy.
Hubbard’s survey shows a section of a Concord Mill Dam Company property in 1834, along the south side of what is now Main Street. It includes the size and configuration of lots, the location of the mill brook (what Hubbard calls “Mill Ditch”), and the identities of two Mill Dam business owners. One of the men, James Adams, was a furniture maker.
