Rockwood (New York). Bessie Keyes Hudson, early 1880s. From
a carte de visite, presented by Mrs. Walter Miller, 1950.
This photograph of Bessie Keyes
Hudson as a young woman conveys serenity, sweetness of temper, quiet
strength, sensibility, and intelligence—all characteristics that Mrs.
Hudson admired in women who had influenced her while growing up in
Concord. A viewer unaware of the identity of the sitter would
undoubtedly recognize in this portrait an adult version of the little
person shown in the baby picture of Bessie Keyes presented to the
library by her daughter (see #9).
