4. Alfred Munroe (Concord). David
Buttrick and great-grandson Herbert Buttrick
Hosmer, ca. 1886. From a glass plate negative, presented by Henry
Francis Smith.
Monument Street resident and life-long Concordian David Buttrick was born here in 1800. He married Rebecca Barrett Hunt in December of 1826. Their first child, Humphrey Hunt Buttrick, was born five months later. Humphrey Hunt Buttrick married Lucy Ann Tolman in 1856. Their daughter Henrietta, born in 1859, married Herbert W. Hosmer—son of Nathan S. and Sophia Wheeler Hosmer—in 1884. Like his great-grandfather, Herbert and Henrietta's first son Herbert Buttrick Hosmer (nicknamed Bebe) was born (in 1885) and died (1960) in Concord. Concord storekeeper, photographer, and early Thoreauvian Alfred Winslow Hosmer was young Herbert's uncle. In maturity, Herbert Buttrick Hosmer gave his uncle's rich collection of books by and about Thoreau and hundreds of his glass plate negatives to the Concord Free Public Library. |
