22. Concord Celebrates Lee's Surrender, 1865
General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This Concord broadside, which was printed and distributed immediately upon receiving the news, announces a celebratory dance in the Town Hall the day after Lee's surrender. The Concord community thus first sent troops into battle from, and ultimately fêted Union victory in, its Town House.
