Note to the 1970 and 1981 editions: Numerous insertions have been made by Mrs. Caleb (Ruth R.) Wheeler (RRW) and we have not usually noted her initials for these. Other insertions by Elizabeth R. Pickard are initialed. Mr. Tolman's manuscript was signed six years before Albert Gallatin Wheeler published in 1914 his 1250 page History of the Wheeler Family in America, but Mr. Tolman had many details not in Gallatin's book. Also, RRW notes that articles related to the English origins of the Wheelers can be found in the American Genealogist, Vol. 12, pp. 4-17 and 135 and Vol. 14, pp 1-4 – July 1935 and Jan. 1936.

Note to the 2006 edition: This edition attempts to bring the earlier documents up to date. Its editor, Joseph C. Wheeler (JCW), had considerable help from Ann Young, Barbara Wheeler, George Francis Wheeler III, Marian Wheeler, Phebe Packer, Kenneth Turkington, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wheeler and other family members. This new edition has been renumbered for ease of use.

The number after a name denotes the generation, with the first generation being that of one of the six “early settlers” listed in the table of contents below.

The George Wheeler Line

GEORGE 1 WHEELER m. KATHERINE PYN

George Wheeler was an early settler of Concord: The first record I find of his name is in 1640. He appears to have been a person of some influence, and his name appears often on town records. He was selectman in 1660. His house lot of 11 acres was at the (present) corner of Main and Walden Streets, and in conjunction with Capt. Timothy Wheeler, who I think was very probably his nephew, he owned a large amount of land in the center of the town. He had also land near the “frog-ponds” and at Walden Pond, and at Nut Meadow Brook. His death is not recorded but his will was dated January 28, 1684/5 and presented for probate June 2, 1687. (Suffolk Prob. Reg. Vol. X fol. 1) His sons Thomas and John were named executors, but the former had died between the above dates and John was named sole executor. The will names “the children of my son William deceased, sons Thomas and John, daughters Elizabeth Fletcher, Sarah Dudley, Ruth Hartwell and Hannah Fletcher, and the children of my daughter ‘Fox' “. His age is not known, but as he had a son married in 1657, and as the birth of the youngest of his eight children occurred in 1645, it is probable that he was born between 1600 and 1610. I think it probable that he was a brother of Obadiah.

[George married Katherine Pyn 9 Dec.1631 -- RRW] Katherine d. 2 Jan. 1684/5. According to a letter from Lexington genealogist Winifred Lovering Holman dated 21 June 1945, George Wheeler married first, 12 May 1645, Mary Studd.] His children by Katherine, as shown by his will and by the Town records were:

2.   I Thomas 2             m. Hannah Harwood

3. II William 2   [b. 1633 – AY]         m. Hannah Buss

4.    III Ruth             m. Samuel Hartwell

5.    IV Elizabeth            m. Francis 2 Fletcher [b. 1636 in Concord. They married 1 Aug. 1656. On April 15 1682, their son Samuel 3 Fletcher, who was born 6 Aug. 1657 and died 23 Oct. 1741, married another Elizabeth 2 Wheeler -- #3008. She was born 23 Feb. 1664. Samuel 3 Fletcher was a Corporal under Capt. Timothy Wheeler (#2901) and fought in King Philip's War. He was a Selectman 1705-7. – JCW]

6.    V Hannah             m. [Samuel] Fletcher [son of William, son of Robert - RRW] [Note: Births, Marriages and Deaths has “Hanna Wheler” marrying Samewell (Samuel) Smedly 11 July 1667 and “ffrancies ffletcher” marrying Elizabeth Wheeler 11 Oct. 1656. See also note under # 5 – JCW]

She was the daughter of Thomas Goble (Gobill). Joseph and Abigail's son Benjamin Dudley was born in Concord 20 March 1698/9 and married Elizabeth Rice of Sudbury. Then their son Joseph Dudley married Mary Warren of Westborough in 1732 -- JCW]

8.    VII John 2    b. 19 March 1643       m. Sarah Larkin

9.    VIII Mary    b. 6 Sept. 1645         m. Eliphalet 2 Fox [They married 26 Oct. 1665. He was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Fox. Eliphlet and Mary Wheeler Fox' daughter Mary married Peter Harwood – JCW]

2.THOMAS 2 WHEELER m. HANNAH HARROD or HARWOOD   George 1

They married 10 Oct. 1657. [Apparently, wife Hannah was daughter of John Harwood and Dorothy - Source: see bolded 212. THOMAS 6 WHEELER - JCW]. His death not of record, nor that of his wife who survived him. [He apparently died 1687 in Concord, MA - Source: see 212. THOMAS 6 WHEELER - JCW]. On 21 Sept. 1687 administration of his estate was granted to his widow Hannah, and his son Thomas. The inventory begins thus: “an inventory of the estate of Thomas Wheeler, son of George Wheeler late of Concord deceased.” (Suffolk Prob. Reg. Vol. X fol 115-116).

[RRW notes that Thomas's descendants in Marlboro, Worcester and Hardwick are described in a paperback on the Wheeler and Warren families compiled by Henry Warren Wheeler, Albany, 1892.] His children, as per Town Records, were:

On 15 March 1693/4 John Wheeler Senior of Concord, son of and apparent heir to George Wheeler late of said Concord dec'd quitclaims to William, John and George Wheeler, all his right title and interest in certain lands in the south part of Concord “that were in the possession of their father William Wheeler deceased.”

On the same date another agreement sets forth that “Whereas William Wheeler late of Concord died some time since, possessed of several lands of which he had no legal conveyance as also of a competency of personal and moveable estate, -- but as yet there has been no final settlement of said estate, -- and there being a considerable part of said moveable estate is wasted one way or other and doth not appear, and the rest of which is disposed of by Hannah, relict of the sd Wm Wheeler, and for a final settlement of the whole of the remaining part of the sd estate, amongst the children of the sd Wm Wheeler, and to prevent any further trouble and contention about the premises and to settle peace and unity that may be lasting, they, viz: William Wheeler, John Wheeler and George Wheeler, sons to the sd Wm deceased, upon their own accounts, and Nicholas Shevalley on behalf of Rebeckah his wife of sd Concord, and James Burley of Ipswich on the behalf of Elizabeth his wife, both daughters of sd Wm Wheeler dec'd, do agree in manner and form following, as to the division of property, by virtue of which agreement Wm [#16] as oldest son had a double share of the real estate, and John [#19] and George [#20] and the two younger sons divided the rest, and the personal property was parceled out among the daughters. The land was all in the Nine Acre Corner district, and some of it is in the family to this day.

The children of William and Hannah (Buss) Wheeler, as shown by the Town Records, and by this agreement, (the birth of sons John and George not being of record), were:

2. The Obadiah Wheeler Line

1001 OBADIAH 1 WHEELER m. SUSANNA WHEELER

Susanna was a sister to George #1 from Cranefield, Bedfordshire. [This is apparently incorrect. Susanna was the daughter of Thomas the Elder (1561-1634) by his second wife Rebecca, J.C.W., 2014]. For Susanna's family relationships see J.C.W. commentary at the beginning of Section 7: Probable English Ancestry of the Concord Wheelers.

The will of Obadiah Wheeler "aged about three score and three years" was dated 6 Oct. 1671.

So he was born about 1608.

[According to this section of Tolman, Obadiah was” probably brother of the first George (George#1). However, this is contradicted by the information in the first paragraph above taken from the section on Probable English Ancestry -- JCW] He seems to have lived at first very near the center of the village, for in 1653 we find in the Town Records that [the residents of] "the East Quarter are to make and maintain all the highways from Obadiah Wheeler's house along to the baywards." etc. We afterward find his son Obadiah, in 1675, living on the Lancaster road beyond the South River, on land which may perhaps have been first set off to the senior.

The will of Obadiah Wheeler was imperfect in that it was not witnessed, and administration of his estate was granted to "Thomas Wheeler the kinsman and John Wheeler the son" of the testator. The document names "son Joshua first born and heir;" 2nd son Samuel"; "son Obadiah"; "son John"; "youngest son Josiah, and daughter Susanna". This shows that the son John whose birth in 1641 is recorded, must have died young, and have [been] succeeded by another of the same name whose birth was not recorded.

Obadiah 1 Wheeler died 29 Oct 1671 at 83. His wife Susanna died 24 March 1649. Their children, on authority of the Town Records, and of his will, were:

1002     I Joshua 2 [born in England]         m. Elizabeth

1003     II John 2   b. 23 Jan 1640/1   d. young

1004     III Ruth     b. 23 April 1642         m. Samuel Hartwell

1005     IV a son   b. 25 Nov. 1643     d. 29 Nov. 1643

1006     V Samuel 2   b. 22 Feb. 1655/6       m. Mary Perry

1007     VI John 2   [Was he killed by Indians at Oyster River, Durham NH leaving three sons, one of whom was Richard of Bedford? – RRW]]

1008     VII Susanna   b. 16 March 1649       m. Shipley

1009     VIII Obadiah 2             m. Elizabeth [White]

1010     IX Josiah 2   “who was slain in ye engagement with ye Indians at Sudbury April ye 21, 1676.” Administration was granted to John Wheeler and Elizabeth (wife of Joshua) who deposes that “I heard my brother Josiah say that he willed one half of his estate to his brother John.” (Middlesex Probate Records Vol. VI fol 91.)

Probably the two youngest children were by a second wife, though there was no record of a second marriage.

1002 JOSHUA 2 WHEELER m. ELIZABETH         Obadiah 1

There is no record of the death here of Joshua, nor of his wife, nor is there any will or record of administration in Middlesex County. They were both living in 1703, when with their consent their son Isaac sells land in Concord to Isaac Temple (Deeds III-624)   [Tolman in a later paragraph says: Joshua Wheeler died at Central Village CT 4 Feb. 1725; Elizabeth his wife died ibid 12 Feb. 1715/6 in the 80th year of her age.]

Joshua had a house lot of 14 acres on Walden Street, between George Wheeler [#1] on the corner of Main Street and Robert Merriam who lived on the Ebenezer Hubbard place (Hubbard Street). He had a mill on the little brook that runs from just south of Walden Pond to the river at Fairhaven. [Walcott on page 79 of his Concord in the Colonial Period puts this mill at "Swamp Bridge" on the brook crossing Sudbury Road betweet Grant Street and Southfield Road. He said the mill built in 1691, was jointly owned by Joshua Wheeler and Jonathan Prescott. RRW/JCW]

The birth of but one child is recorded. [Walcott, p. 79, old roads mss believes this mill at swamp bridge was on Sudbury Road near Robin Wheeler's house [235 Sudbury Road] [and] was jointly owned with Jonathan Prescott.] Their children were:

Samuel 3of Brookfield and Joanna Walcott married 23 Nov. 1704. [Tolman says that Samuel had three children by Joanna and then ten more by a second wife Dorcas Pellett, daughter of Thomas and Phelice Pellett. He indicates that in 1762 Dorcas, widow of Samuel Wheeler, and her son Judah, “who last came from Acton”, were warned out of Westford. However a note has been added as follows: “This is surely wrong. He had other children in Brookfield by Joanna. Miss Holman says but one wife Joanna, d. 4 July 1751, Brookfield.]

RRW also cites a 1717 document reproduced on page 27 of Lapham's Carlisle Corporate Community which is a release from Tabitha, widow of Abraham Wheeler of Lancaster and Samuel Wheeler, brother-in-law, of any claim to land, now in Jonathan Wheeler's (and?) her sons possession. The document was also signed by James Blood, her son-in-law. The document is blotted but seems to call Samuel Wheeler her son. RRW suggests she had two sons: Obadiah and Jonathan.]

The Tibbetts lived in Concord 1859-1873 and 1878-1887 and it was through the Tibbetts family that Henry C. 6 Wheeler came to own the farm at 215 Virginia Road where the Thoreau Birth House had been located before it was moved to its present location in 1878. He owned the farm at 215 Virginia Road from 1883 to 1915. Sarah Tibbetts Wheeler died 9 Dec. 1899. — JCW]

3. The Lieut. Joseph Wheeler Line

2701   JOSEPH 1 WHEELER m. (1) ELIZABETH (2) SARAH MERIAM

Elizabeth died in childbirth on 20 Sept. 1643; her death was recorded as 20 July 1643, the copyist having rendered the 7 by July instead of September, thus transfixing Dr. Savage with astonishment, and he confesses his inability to solve the puzzle how she could have died in July and given birth to a child in September. Joseph married (2) Sarah, widow of Joseph Meriam [who died 1 Jan. 1640/1] [Joseph, son of William of Hadlow, Kent, was baptized 18 Feb. 1610 according to a note in RRW files –JCW.] [Sarah had already had seven children by Joseph Meriam - JCW] The children of Joseph 1 Wheeler were:

By Elizabeth

2702     I Ephraim 2   b.14 April 1640       d. 19 July 1642

2703     II Joseph 2   b. 1 Dec. 1641       d. 18 July 1642

2704     III Mary     b. 20 Sept. 1643     d. same day

By Sarah

2705     IV Rebecca   b. 6 Sept. 1645         m. (1) Peter Bulkeley (2) Jonathan Prescott

Lieut. Joseph Wheeler seems to have been connected with the Charlestown Wheelers, for on 17 Dec. 1678 "Joseph Wheeler, 68 years old", testifies to having been present when Thomas Wheeler of Charlestown made his will, which he died without signing. In May 1681, being then "71 years old", he makes affidavit as to the laying out of certain lots of land in Concord several years before. He had a large amount of property on the Merrimack River, and 12 Aug. 1670, Joseph Wheeler and his wife Sarah of Concord sell 700 acres there to Cornelius Waldo. In 1676 he buys of John Hull 300 acres near Dunstable, and in 1678 he buys of Joseph Wheeler of Malden and his wife Frances and in 1679 Joseph Wheeler of Malden and his wife Frances sell about 150 acres of this to John Hayward of Boston. On 12 Feb. 1660 the selectmen of Concord grant to Lieut. Joseph Wheeler a tract of land lying between the line of Chelmsford and the line of Nashoba 610 acres in all, and 4 April 1679, Joseph Wheeler and wife Frances of Concord, sell the same to Ralph Shepard. It is therefore to be inferred that he married a third wife Frances, and removed to Dunstable and afterward to Malden. He left no will.

4. The Captain Thomas Wheeler Line

2801 CAPTAIN THOMAS 1 WHEELER m RUTH WOOD

[According to a note in RRW's files Thomas was baptized 8 April 1620. See also articles in the American Genealogist , Volume 12 pp 4-17 and after p 135 and in Volume 14 by Homer W. Brainard– JCW] Samuel G. Drake in his History of Boston , surmises (p. 196) that this Thomas Wheeler was the one to whom a grant of land was set down at Muddy River (p. 94 Boston Book of Possessions ). He also says (p.406) that "this Captain Wheeler, of the Brookfield fight, I believe to be the same one once owner of the point still bearing his name. He was of Concord at this time, having gone there recently." Here Mr. Drake is all wrong. The Thomas of Muddy River was a tailor: lived at what is now the corner of Bedford and Washington Streets: died at Boston 16 May 1654: his widow married John Pierce of Dorchester, and some years later sells this Muddy River land, "the property formerly of Thomas Wheeler" to “Thomas Hammond" {Suffolk Deeds Vol 3 p. 296.)

The other Thomas of Boston, who owned "Wheeler's Point", was a vintner: lived on the north side of "the street leading from the South Meeting House easterly" on land which was conveyed to him by Wm. Pell and his wife Alice,:in consideration of the love and affection they have unto their daughter Hannah wife of said Thomas". This Thomas and Hannah have several children in Boston, and were living there in 1681, when they buy land of Jonathan Bridgham. In Jan. 1690 adm estate of Thomas Wheeler, vintner, of Boston is granted to his widow Hannah, who with her sons Thomas and Joseph, sell to Thomas Bossonger this same property that had come to them from Wm. Pell. (Suffolk Deed XV-69).These facts make it impossible that either of these two Thomas Wheelers could have been the Capt. Thomas Wheeler to whom the Town of Concord leased 260 acres of land in 1669, and whom we knew to be the Thomas of the Quaboag fight, and the brother of Capt. Timothy Wheeler {No. 2901) Savage's identification of him, as having had a second wife Sarah, etc. is still more absurd, he died 19 Dec, 1678. The births of his children are not of record here, nor is his marriage, nor the death of his wife, but the record of his death is explicit: "Capt. Thomas Wheeler, husband of Ruth, died 10-10-1676". Thomas Wheeler, son of the widow Ruth died 17-12-1676/7. Nathaniel Wheeler, son of ye widow Ruth died 9-12-1676/7"

Joseph, Ephraim and Deliverance are identified by their uncle Timothy's will and on 19 June 1677, Joseph Wheeler is made administrator of the estates of his brothers Thomas and Nathaniel, the estate of the former, who had been with his father at the Quaboag fight, consisting only of "Horse, pistols, a cutlas and gun", and that of the latter of "one pair of oxen". The facts that Timothy (2901) had land in Charlestown, and that Deliverance (2806) lived for some time in Charlestown after his marriage, seems to infer some connection between this line of Wheelers and the Charlestown Wheelers. [See pp 377-408 of Hudson's History of Concord available at the Concord Free Public Library for the story of the Wheelers in King Philip's War – see also King Philip's War by Eric B. Schultz and Michael Tougias, Countryman Press, 1999 where on pp. 357-61 is printed Captain Thomas Wheeler's Narrative. Another book making reference to Wheeler is The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity by Jill Lepore, Alfred Knopf, New York 1998. -- JCW]

Captain Thomas 1 Wheeler's wife was Ruth Wood, daughter of William Wood, but I have found no record of her birth or death, nor of their marriage. [William Wood's will names son Michael and grand daughter Abigail Hosmer, wife of Thomas Wheeler - RRW] Their children were:

2802     I Thomas 2           d. 16 Feb. 1676/7 [He died of wounds from the Brookfield fight that led to the death of his father. Brainard puts his birth at “before 1652” and his death at 9 Jan. 1676/7 – JCW.]

[Brainard includes a Ruth, born “about 1652”, dying 7 May 1673 and married to Ephraim Jones. Births, Marriages and Deaths has “Ephram Jones” marrying “Reuth Wheeler” on 7 May 1673. It has him dying 23 Jan 1676 but includes no date for Ruth's death. An RRW note suggests that Ruth subsequently married Thomas Brown and then Jonathan Prescott. Births, marriages and deaths, p. 20, has a Capt. Jonathan Prescott marrying Ruth Brown 18 Aug. 1718 – JCW]

2803     II Nathaniel 2   [b. “about 1655”]   d. 9 Feb. 1676/7 [or 16 Jan. or 9 Dec. 1676 - JCW]

2804     III Joseph 2             m. Mary Powers

2805     IV Ephraim 2         d. 19 Feb. 1689

2806     V Deliverance 2             m. Mary Davis [daughter of Lt. Simon 2 Davis – RRW]

2804 JOSEPH 2 WHEELER m. MARY POWERS         Thomas 1

They married 1 March 1681. She was the daughter of Walter Powers . The 1st , 5th, 6th and 7th children are recorded in Concord; the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in Stow, and the 8th in Stratfield CT.

17th June 1695 Joseph Wheeler and wife Mary convey to Rebecca Minot (2905) all their rights, etc. in Concord New Grant, "formerly belonging to my uncle Timothy Wheeler deceased". He went with his family to Stratfield CT where he joined the Stratfield church 20 Dec. 1698, and where he died in the spring of the following year. His widow appears to have returned to Massachusetts for on 20 March 1716, her son Joseph, (who had just come of age) quitclaims to her all his rights etc. in the property of his father in Stow. The dates here given as those of the birth of his children are from the Concord and Stow records. They differ, in two instances, from those given in the History of Stratford page 1344, nor does the Stratford Historian mention the daughter Ruth, although she was administrix of the estate and rendered an account to the Middlesex Probate Court, 1 Oct. 1706.

But the facts are quite enough to identify the Joseph of Stratfield with Joseph the son of Capt. Thomas. Their children were:

2807     I Ruth     b. 19 Nov. 1682     [single woman – RRW]

2808     II Mary     b. 24 Oct. 1684

2809     III Rebecca   b. 31 July 1686

2810     IV Esther   b. 29 Jan. 1687/8

2811     V Elizabeth   b. 17 July 1690

2812     VI Jane     b. 16 Jan. 1692

2813     VII Joseph 3   b. 12 Jan. 1694/5

2814     VIII Ephraim 3   b. 28 July 1697

30 Sept 1706, Ruth Wheeler, of Fairfield CT, single woman, sells 57 acres in Stow, "formerly belonging to my hon'd father Joseph Wheeler, now deceased". (xiv - 367)

2806 DELIVERANCE 2 WHEELER m. MARY DAVIS       Thomas1

They married 28 May 1691. Mary was born 2 or 3 Oct. 1663, daughter of Lieut. Simon and Mary (Blood) Davis. She was the sister of Sarah, the wife of Thomas Wheeler (No. 11)

Deliverance sold out his property in Concord in 1692, and seems to have gone to Charlestown for a while, as his 2 nd son was born there. 24 Jan 1701 he bought land in Stow, and died there intestate in 1720, administration of his estate granted to his widow 19 April 1720, and the estate divided just a year later to “Deliverance 1st son; Thomas 2 nd son; and Ephraim 3 rd son”, the daughter Mary not appearing in the division. Their children were:

2815     I Deliverance 3   b. 5 June 1692

2816     II Thomas 3   b. 24 June 1697         m. Elizabeth Gates

2817     III Ephraim 3   ( “in his 17 th year” 19 April 1720) d. 9 Oct. 1723

2818     IV Mary     b. 5 Nov. 1707, at Stow.

2816   THOMAS 3 WHEELER m. ELIZABETH GATES       Deliv2/Thomas1

They married 15 April 1722. He was living at Harvard in 1740. Their children were:

2819     I Thomas 4   b. 30 Jan. 1722/3 at Stow     m. Mary Gates

2820     II Mary     b. 25 Feb. 1726/7 at Stow

2819 THOMAS 4 WHEELER m. MARY GATES         Thom3/Deliv2/Thom1

The inventory of Thomas' estate was made 23 January 1756, and guardian appointed 13 April 1756 to the children named below who are said to be “under 14 yrs old: children of Thomas and Mary Gates Wheeler.”

2821     I Deliverance 5   b. 22 Dec. 1749

2822     II Thomas 5   b. 1 Feb. 1752

2823     III Mary     b. 4 July 1754

5. The Captain Timothy Wheeler Line

2901 [CAPTAIN] TIMOTHY 1 WHEELER m. (1) JANE (2) MARY BROOKS

Timothy 1 Wheeler appears to have settled in Charlestown, and had also, says Bond, a freehold in Watertown, but the birth of a daughter to him in 1640, and the death of his first wife in 1643, are recorded in Concord. In 1663 and again in 1683 he sells land in Charlestown, and in Jan. 1683/4 he sells to his son-in-law Ebenezer Prout his corn mill in Menotomy. His will (Suffolk Reg. X-103) was dated 1 March1680 at which time he says he is 82 years old; but his gravestone makes him 86 years old at the time of his death 30 July 1687. The inventory of his estate calls him Timothy Wheeler, Jr. In his will, after a bequest of land to the Town of Concord, he names "my brother Caleb Brooks"; "my cousin Samuel and his sister Susanna Shipley"; "my cousin Joshua"; "Joseph, Ephraim and Deliverance, my brother Thomas his sons" [presumably this should read: "my brother Thomas' sons - JCW]; "Ephraim & Joseph the two youngest sons of my nephew Sergeant Thomas Wheeler", "Sarah Jones my grandchild"; "my son & daughter Proust", and "my daughter Rebecca Minot". [Deed 4-459 of 1664/5 also speaks of his “brother”, Gorsham Brooks. – JCW]

[In her copy, RRW left a note as follows: “Timothy Wheeler's will (copied by RRW in Suffolk County Court House) : Mary Wheeler (?)

This is the only key we have to the relationships of the early Wheelers, and shows:

1st Captain Timothy Wheeler # 2901 and Captain Thomas Wheeler #2801 were brothers

2nd They were nephews of Obadiah #1001

3rd They were both uncles of Sergeant Thomas Wheeler #3001, since Captain Thomas' son Thomas died in 1677

  4th Timothy's 2nd wife was a Brooks.

Captain Timothy 1 Wheeler's first wife Jane died 12 February 1642/3, and he married 2nd Mary Brooks, daughter of Thomas & Grace Brooks. She died 4 Oct. 1693. The children were:

2902     I Sarah     b. 22 June 1640         m. John Farwell

2903     II Elizabeth   Birth not recorded but she was probably 2nd child, for she was of marriageable age 28 May 1678, at which date she married Ebenezer Proust

2904     III Mary     b. 3 Oct 1657       d. 7 Oct. 1660

2905     IV Rebecca   b. 1666             m. James Minott (sic) [Captain James Minot was the grandfather of Jonas Minot who became step-grandfather to Henry David Thoreau. 6. The Sergeant Thomas Wheeler Line

3001 SERGEANT THOMAS 1 WHEELER m. (1) SARAH MERIAM (2) SARAH STEARNS

Sarah Meriam [was born about 1626 - JCW], the daughter of Joseph Meriam and Sara[h] (Goldstone) Meriam. [Sara Goldstone was the daughter of John and (probably) Frances (Jefferie) Goldstone of Tonbridge -- according to the Meriam Genealogy - JCW]. This is shown by a deed (17 April 1667) from the heirs of Jos. Meriam dec'd, to Joseph Wheeler [#2701], who had married their mother, conveying to him their several shares of their late father's estate, among the signers of which deed are Thomas Wheeler and his wife Sarah. He lived in the east part of the town, and at various times conveys to one or another of his sons lands at “Verginy in Concord”.

The will of Timothy Wheeler (#2901) speaks of him as “my nephew, Serg't Thomas Wheeler”, but he could not have been the son of Captain Thomas (#2801) whom we know to have been a brother of Timothy, for Cap't Thomas and his son Thomas had both died before the date of Timothy's will. We may fairly presume that he was born not far from the year 1625.

Sarah Meriam, Sgt. Thomas Wheeler's first wife, died 1 Feb. 1676/7 and he married 2d Sarah [Beers] Stearns 23 July 1677: she was the widow of Isaac Stearns of Lexington, and her maiden name was Beers. [This Isaac Stearns, Jr. was the son of Watertown first settler Isaac Stearns – JCW] Sgt. Thomas died 24 Dec. 1704 at 76; his widow died 24 [or 21] January 1723/4. His children were born in Concord, ten by his first wife and three by his second.

[This Sgt. Thomas Wheeler received much of the Virginia Road land in Concord's First and Second Divisions – including the farm where Henry David Thoreau was born. – JCW]

3005 JOHN 2 WHEELER m. (1) SARAH STEARNS (2) SARAH JONES     Thomas1

John and Sarah Stearns married 27 Dec. 1678. She was born 14 Jan. 1662, daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Beers) Stearns. (Her mother married John Wheeler's father.) She died 29 Dec. 1727. He married 2 nd Sarah Farwell Jones, widow of John Jones: this is shown by her will, in which she calls herself “relict of Deac. John Wheeler” and leaves her property to the children of John Jones. Deacon John Wheeler had by his will left to her “all the movable estate she brought with her”, as per a pre-nuptial agreement. She was by birth Sarah Farwell, b. 2 May 1662, daughter of John and Sarah (Wheeler) Farwell, her mother [#2902] being the oldest child of Capt. Timothy Wheeler (2901). She was married first 5 May 1681 to John Jones who died in Feb. 1725/6, and she is mentioned in [Capt.] Timothy Wheeler's will as “my grand-daughter Sarah Jones.” Her marriage to Deacon John Wheeler is not of record. She died 18 April 1741.

[Some historians believe that this John Wheeler, about the time of his second marriage, built the house now known as the Wheeler-Minot Farmhouse (birth place of Henry David Thoreau) – see National Register application – JCW]

Deacon John Wheeler died 1 Dec. 1736. His will names wife Sarah, and all his children below, excepting Joseph and Nathaniel who had already deceased. He leaves also to his “grandson Joseph Wheeler of Acton” all his right interest etc. in Concord New Grant.

His children, recorded in Concord, and all by his first wife, were:

3015     I Joseph 3   b. 27 Jan. 1679       m. Sarah Ball [10 April 1705]

7. The Probable English Ancestry of the Concord Wheelers

by George Tolman

with notes from the Cranefield, Bedfordshire records

[From J.C.W. in 2014.  In 2013 I obtained (Courtesy of Sharon Hamilton) a copy of Raymond David Wheeler’s book Volume I of “The Wheeler Genealogy” published in 1993.  This provides additional information on the Cranfield Wheelers.  This is available at the Special Collections of the Concord Free Public Library.  Raymond David Wheeler provides the following in his introduction to Volume I:  Henry Wheeler, born in 1503 and deceased in 1557 married Isable Allen (1524-1570) and had five children including Thomas (1526-) and John (1533-1567).  Thomas (1526-) had six children (Henry, Isabel, John, George, Thomas and William). His son Thomas Wheeler (1578-) in turn had George Wheeler (1605/06-1687) (Tolman #1) as well as other children.

Henry’s John (1533-1567) who married Alice Sayre had Thomas the Elder of Bourne End (1561-1634) and John the Elder (1563-1643).  Thomas the Elder (1561-1634), according to Raymond David Wheeler, had thirteen children by two wives.  Thomas the Elder’s children by his first wife were Thomas Sr. (1588-); John (1590-); Priscilla (1593-); Ann (1595-) and Deborah (1598-).  Thomas the Elder’s second wife Rebecca’s children were Elizabeth (1602-); Captain Timothy (1604-1687) (Tolman #2901); Susanna (1607-1648/9); Lt. Joseph (1609/10-) (Tolman #2701); Abiah (1612/13-); Mary (1615-); Ephraim (1618/19-); and Captain Thomas (1620-1676) (Tolman #2801).  Thomas Sr. (1588-) had Sgt. Thomas Wheeler (1630-1704) (Tolman # 3001).

John (1563-1643) had a son Obadiah (1608-1671)(Tolman #1001).  According to Tolman, Obadiah is a brother to George (1605/6-1687) (Tolman #1) but Raymond David Wheeler suggests Obadiah is the son of John (1563-1643) and thus a cousin to George (1605/6-1687) (Tolman #1). Therefore it is unclear as to where Obadiah belongs. Thus from Henry’s children come all six of Tolman’s early settler Wheelers.]

[Note to reader: see also the American Genealogist , Volume 12 pp 4-17 and after p 135 and Volume 14 for later analyses by Homer W. Brainard – JCW]

GEORGE WHEELER, son of John Wheeler, was baptized at Cranfield, Bedfordshire 18 March 1605/6. [Also reported to be 28 March, 1605 by Winifred Lovering Holman, genealogist of Lexington, in a letter of 21 June, 1945 to RRW. She also stated that George was the son of Thomas Wheeler.]

SUSANNA, daughter of John Wheeler, was baptized 16 February, 1609/10.

OBADIAH, son of John Wheeler of Doswell, was baptized at Cranfield 5 December 1609.

KATHERINE, daughter of the same John, was baptized 25 February 1610/11.

GEORGE WHEELER and KATHERINE WHEELER were married at Cranfield 9 December 1631.

OBADIAH and SUSANNA WHEELER were married at Cranfield 20 January 1633/4.

Apparently, then, George Wheeler married a sister of Obadiah and Obadiah Wheeler married a sister of George.

The relationship between the two Johns, fathers of these four can only be guessed. The name of Wheeler was at that time the name most frequently occurring on Cranfield Parish Registers, of all the names therein recorded, and beside these two above quoted instances of intermarriages among members of the same family name (Wheeler) there are several more there recorded which it is unnecessary to mention here.

The will of “John Wheeler of Cranfield the elder of that name” was dated 18 January 1642/3 and offered for probate 22 January 1644/5. In it he names “my oldest son John”, “son of Isaac”, “son Obadiah”, “daughter Mary Barrett”, daughter Katherine Wheeler”, “son William”, and several grandchildren. Wife Elizabeth to be Executrix.

The will of “John Wheeler of East Inn Cranfield, Yeoman, the eldest of that name” is dated 29 October 1632, and offered for probate 7 January 1632/3. He mentions no wife so we may infer that she was by then deceased: also he names “eldest son Ralph” as executor. Sons Thomas, John, Henry, George and William, “daughter Susanna Wheeler” and two other daughters.

It seems that George's father John was older than Obadiah's father John, but that there was still one, or perhaps more, Johns living after the decease of George's father.

There seems to be no room for doubt that the George and wife Katherine, and Obadiah and wife Susanna, who turned up in Concord in 1638 or thereabouts are the George, Katherine, Obadiah and Susanna of Cranefield, Bedfordshire, England. The coincidence of names alone ought to go far in evidence, but there are some circumstances in confirmation of the theory.

Cranefield or Cranfield, (for it is spelled both ways on their own records), is a village in Bedfordshire, eight miles from Woodell, or Odell, the parish from which came the Rev. Peter Bulkeley of Concord. Three miles distant therefrom is an old manor, then still known as “Virginia House”. Now in Concord we had from the very earliest times, the “Virginia Road”, (over which Mr. A. E. Wood thinks the first settlers came) leading up through the “Virginia Meadows”, to a section of country known on our earliest records as “Cranefield”; and Wheelers, it may be noted, owned land just there.

George Wheeler of Cranfield, Eng. Was son of John; George Wheeler of Concord named a son John.

In October 1616, certain minor children of one Richard Wheeler of Cranfield were placed under the guardianship of one William Odell. One William Odell turns up in Concord along with the Wheelers in 1638, and settles in the easterly part of the township, in the “Virginia” and “Cranefield” locality.

Neither George nor Obadiah appears in any way on the Parish Records of Cranefield, after the record of their marriages. They must have gone somewhere. It is a fair conjecture merely that she was Mary, wife of the first Humphrey Barret, who came to Concord about the same time as did the Wheelers.

A certain Isaac Wheeler, brother of Obadiah, was born on Cranfield in 1607, and the only mention of him thereafter to be found in England turns up in Charlestown, Mass., who is proved by record evidence to be related to the Concord Wheelers.

One Richard Wheeler died in Cranfield in 1616, leaving a son Richard a minor under 17 yrs. Of age, who never again appears on Cranfield registers. But just at the time the Concord Wheelers settled here, a certain Richard Wheeler, settled at Dedham, Mass., removing later to Lancaster where he was killed by the Indians in 1675, and his children fled to Concord (perhaps to be near their own kinfolk?) [returning later to Lancaster when that town was reestablished.]

One Thomas Wheeler was baptized 20 November 1603 and Joseph was baptized 28 February 1609/10 sons of Thomas of Cranfield. They do not again appear in any way on Cranefield registers, but “Capt. Thomas” the Quaboag Indian fighter, and “Lieut. Joseph” who were demonstrably brothers, were for may years licensed to trade with the Indians on Merrimack River, and as they grew old came to Concord to live, whither Capt. Timothy, who is shown by his will to have been their brother, had already preceded them.

These considerations, taken all together, seem to prove conclusively that the Concord Wheelers came from this Parish of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England.

Doubtless a thorough search of the registers of other parishes in the same immediate neighborhood would untangle the whole knot of relationships, but it would be very expensive and perhaps unsatisfactory in its results.
