HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY: Collection of photographs, papers, and genealogical information on the Locke and Davis families of Concord, Massachusetts, and the surrounding area. The two families are connected through the marriage of Charles Warren Locke and Helen Russell Davis in 1907. While the collection contains materials from other members of the Locke and Davis families, it is primarily composed of material related to two members of the Locke family, Warren Andrew Locke (October 31, 1847-January 16, 1920) and his grandson Warren Andrew “Andy” Locke (February 23, 1914-October 31, 2002).

Warren Andrew Locke was born on October 31, 1847. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1869 and going on to direct the Harvard Anniversary Chorus and Glee Club.

He was also the Harvard College Organist. While travelling in Germany to study music, he met his wife, Madeline Weidemann, whom he married in 1878; they had five children. Warren Andrew Locke was also the organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston, Massachusetts for 31 years. He died on January 16, 1920.

Warren Andrew “Andy” Locke (also called “Unc”) was born on February 23, 1914. He was the son of Charles Warren Locke and Helen Russell Davis Locke and the grandson of Warren Andrew Locke. He was raised in Concord, Massachusetts, and attended Middlesex  School from 1929-1933. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served in the 999th Field Artillery Battalion on active duty in Europe during World War II. His twin brother William Davis Locke married Mary Trumbull, and beginning in 1946 they operated The Country Store of Concord, where Andy worked for 17 years. Andy married Florence Emerson Forbes in 1965, and they moved to Milton, Massachusetts where they were active volunteers at the First Parish Church in Milton (Unitarian Universalist) and the Neponset River Watershed Association. He died on October 31, 2002.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, genealogical materials, newspaper clippings, and personal notes.
