ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT: Four series: I. Frederick West Holland and Harriet Newcomb Holland, 1827-1896 and undated; II. Frederic May Holland, 1880-81; III. Arthur Holland, 1856-1862; IV. Emma Elizabeth Pugh Holland, 1861-1916.

BIOGRAPHIES:  The Reverend Frederick West Holland (1811-1895) was a respected Unitarian minister, philanthropist, and contributing writer to various nineteenth- and early twentieth-century periodicals.  He was Abigail May Alcott’s cousin (his mother was Sarah May, daughter of Col. Joseph May).  His sister, Sarah May Holland, was the mother of Annie Adams Fields.  His wife, Harriet Newcomb Holland (1809-1897), was from Keene, NH. Their eldest son, Frederic May Holland (1836-1908), was also a noted Unitarian minister and author.  His wife, Anna Bicknell Holland (1838-1928), was a sculptress (credited with the bust of Ephraim Bull in the lobby of the Concord Free Public Library.)  Another son, Arthur Holland (1850-1926) was an iron and steel merchant and railway magnate.  His wife, Sarah Ormsby Burgwin Holland (1859-1940), corresponded with Sarah Orne Jewett, having met her through her husband’s cousin Annie Adams Fields.  Other children of Rev. and Mrs. Frederick West Holland included Emma Elizabeth Pugh Holland (1841-1917), Henry Ware Holland (1844-1909), and Florence Holland (1848-1895).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Collection consists of scrapbooks, letters, essays, newspaper clippings, notes, and ephemera, 1815-1926 (bulk 1827-1910), generated by members of the Holland family. Series I:  Frederick West Holland and Harriet Newcomb Holland, 1827-1896 and undated contains two scrapbooks, the Frederick West Holland and Harriet Newcomb Holland-Sarah Holland scrapbook (1827-1893), incorporating essays and poetry by F.W. Holland, as well as pressed flowers marking events of personal significance; the Frederick West Holland and Harriet Newcomb Holland scrapbook (1842-1873), which includes pieces written by Frederick West Holland; Rev. Holland’s historical, literary, and social notes (1878-1896); letters to Mrs. Holland from Julia Ward Howe and Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (1882 and undated), letters from Julia Ward Howe containing information about meetings, letters from Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, social in nature; Frederick West Holland’s comparative history chart, undated. Series II:  Frederic May Holland, 1880-1881 contains one issue of Free Religious Index, 1880-1881, with printed table of contents with articles by Frederic May Holland noted (self-titled Facts about Hegel and other Essays, contributed by F.M. Holland). Series III: Arthur Holland, 1856-1862 consists of a Civil War scrapbook containing newspaper clippings from a variety of periodicals and includes accounts of events, statistics, speeches, editorials, and patriotic poetry (scrapbook possibly compiled by Frederick West Holland). Series IV: Emma Elizabeth Pugh Holland, 1861-1916 and undated contains materials belonging to Emma Elizabeth Pugh Holland including a scrapbook (1861-1874) containing obituaries, notes, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera; a notebook (undated) containing genealogical information; letters to Emma Elizabeth Pugh Holland from May Alcott, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, and Adelaide Phillipps (1872-1877 and undated) also included are miscellaneous historical and genealogical notes, newspaper clippings, a Holland family genealogy removed from a Bible; and a book.

(Adelaide Phillipps (1838-1882) was a contralto who began performing on stage as a child. During her lifelong career, she sang in opera, oratorio, and concerts. In 1876 the Adelaide Phillipps Opera Company was organized and in 1879 she joined the Ideal Opera Company.)
