ORGANIZATION/ARRANGEMENT: Organized and arranged chronologically.

BIOGRAPHY: Major American landscape photographer. Photographed locations in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Minnesota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California, Washington State, Alaska, and Canada. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, on June 5, 1855. Educated at Williams College (Class of 1877) and the Union and Andover Theological Seminaries. His first career was in the Congregational ministry, to which he was ordained in 1887. He served as pastor at the Como Avenue Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then, for eleven years, as a supply minister. He edited the Northwest Congregationalist (later known as The Kingdom). In 1899, he made a major life change, permanently retiring from the ministry and taking up photography as his livelihood. He practiced this second vocation almost until his death on October 4, 1937.

Gleason moved back to Massachusetts and began to make photographic trips to Concord in the fall of 1899. A pioneer environmentalist, he was drawn to the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Although Concord provided only one of Gleason’s many subjects, it drew him back repeatedly over the remainder of his life. In his photographs of the place, taken over a period of thirty-eight years, Gleason purposefully captured the locations, the wildlife, and the plants that Thoreau had known and about which he had written.

The Boston publishing firm of Houghton Mifflin asked Gleason to provide photographs for its twenty-volume 1906 Walden and Manuscript Editions of Thoreau’s writings. Gleason’s work also illustrated Houghton Mifflin’s 1917 Through the Year with Thoreau.

Gleason was an important figure in the national park movement. Appointed Interior Department Inspector by Stephen Mather (first Director of the National Park Service, Gleason’s close friend, and the subject of some of his photographs), he made expeditions to photograph the nation’s established national parks and also areas under consideration as possible national park lands. Loaded down by the quantity of heavy equipment and supplies that necessarily accompanied an early twentieth century photographer, Gleason travelled to the Rockies, the Sierras, Yellowstone, Bryce and Zion Canyons, the Grand Canyon, the Pacific coast, Mount Rainier, and Alaska. He also photographed the Canadian Rockies.

Gleason’s western photographs were used in lectures by Mather, by the Park Service, and by Gleason himself. In 1908, Gleason gave an illustrated lecture entitled "Glories of the Sierras" to the Appalachian Mountain Club in Boston. In 1915, he presented a series of eight lectures on the national parks of America.

Some of Gleason’s photographs appeared in National Geographic, some illustrated the writings of John Muir. Gleason was a friend of Luther Burbank, whose horticultural experiments he photographed and presented in an illustrated lecture. During the 1920s and 1930s, he was photographer for the Arnold Arboretum in Boston.

In addition to photography, lecturing, and illustrating Thoreau, Muir, and Burbank, Gleason put together albums of his original photographs. Among his compilations are albums of Concord scenes (now in the Concord Free Public Library), scenes of Mount Monadnock (in the Boston Athenaeum), and views of Mount Desert Island.

Gleason and his wife, Lulu Rounds Gleason, had no children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Glass plate and film negatives bearing Concord, Mass., images, made between 1899 and 1937. Subjects include: various geographical features (among them rivers, ponds, brooks, hills, rock formations); landscape views; numerous shots of Walden Pond (including a 1924 series showing lunchstand, autos, swimmers, and state police station) and other Thoreau-related sites; weather phenomena; plant and animal life; buildings (including interiors); old roads and paths; railroad; bridges; Concord- and Thoreau-related art and artifacts; and some people.

The collection also includes a handful of negatives showing places other than Concord (Minneapolis, Minnesota; Carlisle, Sudbury, Wayland, and Princeton, Massachusetts).

Gleason returned repeatedly over the years to the same locations in Concord, shooting familiar subjects from different angles, in different seasons, at various times of day.  The collection consequently includes multiple images of particular landscape features taken at different times.

Although dazzling in its portrayal of nature, Gleason’s work also has human interest. Gleason took photographs of the busy Mill Dam business section and of buildings and private homes as well as of the rivers, meadows, and wildflowers of Concord. A number of images shed light on the history of business, architecture, fashion, recreation, and transportation in the town. Moreover, his work includes some sensitive portraits of individuals.

PROVENANCE, SOURCE OF ACQUISITION, AND DISPOSITION OF OTHER GLEASON NEGATIVES: Some time after Gleason’s death, the A.D. Handy Company--a photographic lab in Boston--came into possession of Gleason’s entire working file of about 8,000 glass plate and film negatives. (The specifics of their acquisition by the Handy Company are unclear.)

While excavating the Thoreau house site at Walden Pond in 1945, Roland Wells Robbins--archaeologist, historian, Thoreauvian, and resident of Lincoln, Massachusetts--brought film to the Handy Company to be processed.  Around 1947/1948, Ken MacDonald, owner of the company brought the negatives to his attention. Robbins purchased some of the negatives, was later given the rest of the collection.

In 1954, Robbins offered all of the Concord and Thoreau-related negatives for sale to the Concord Free Public Library. The Library Trustees agreed to purchase about 700 of the Concord negatives (a mixture of glass plate and film), leaving Robbins the rest of the collection, including about 1,200 Concord and Thoreau-related negatives. The negatives described in this finding aid are those purchased by the Library from Roland Robbins in 1954.

In 1979, Roland Robbins sold Gleason’s Canadian images to the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta. In 1980, he sold the remainder of the collection to Nick Mills and Heather Conover. Mills and Conover sold most of the Yosemite negatives to the Yosemite Museum in 1989. In 1997, Mills and Conover sold the rest of the collection (about 6,000 negatives) to the Concord Free Public Library. As of fall, 2002, the collection has been arranged, described, and microfilmed through a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and is available for research use. A finding aid will soon be available online on this website.

ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL FORMS AVAILABLE: Positive microfilm service copies available for use in the Library and for interlibrary loan. (The collection was processed and cataloged and the microfilm prepared through National Historical Publications and Records Commission grant number 97-063.) The Library owns copy negatives for the provision of prints for patrons (also prepared through NHPRC grant number 97-063). Information about interlibrary loan, the provision of prints, and reproduction fees and restrictions is available from the Curator of Special Collections, Concord Free Public Library, 129 Main Street, Concord, Massachusetts, 01742.

RESTRICTIONS ON ACCESS: Patron access to images in the collection is via microfilm only (no access to the original negatives).

COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS: None discovered.

PROCESSING NOTES: The captions for images described in this finding aid are Gleason’s own, taken from the original enclosures in which he stored the negatives.

Fifteen badly deteriorated negatives (four glass, eleven cellulose nitrate) were discarded during the 1998 processing of this collection. A separate list of those discarded is appended to this finding aid. In addition, some twenty nitrate negatives were earlier discarded and listed (that list available in Special Collections on request).

An inventory of the Library’s 1954 Gleason purchase was prepared by Barbara and William Howarth in 1972 (also available on request).

PROCESSED BY: LPW, with assistance from volunteers Reed Anthony, Bette Aschaffenburg, Gretchen Frasier, and Mary Hanley. Finding aid prepared February-March, 1998, revised 8/29/99, and 9/07/99.
