BIOGRAPHY: Naturalist, author, photographer. Born Edwin Alfred Teale at Joliet, Illinois, on June 2, 1899. Received an A.B. from Earlham College in 1922, an A.M. from Columbia several years later. Married Nellie Imogene Donovan on Aug. 1, 1923. David Allen, their only child, died in Germany in 1945.
Staff writer for Popular Science from 1928 until 1941; free-lance writer and photographer from 1941 until 1980. GrassrootJungles, a 1937 book on the insect world, displayed the blending of scientific observation and love of nature that made Teale a successful author with broad popular appeal. This book began a career of prolific productivity. His other works include The Golden Throng (1940), Byways toAdventure (1942), Near Horizons (1942), DuneBoy (1943), TheLostWoods (1945), Thoreau’s Walden (illustrated with photographs by and including an introduction and comments by Teale; 1946), DaysWithoutTime (1948), NorthWith the Spring (1951), Circleof theSeasons (1953), The WildernessWorldofJohnMuir (introduction and comments by Teale; 1954), AutumnAcrossAmerica (1956), Adventuresin Nature (1959), JourneyInto Summer (1960), The Lost Dog (1961), The StrangeLivesof Familiar Insects (1962), TheThoughts ofThoreau (selected and with foreword and introduction by Teale; 1962), Wandering ThroughWinter (1965), A NaturalistBuys anOld Farm (1974), A Walk ThroughtheYear (1978), and A Conscious Stillness (1982, posthumously).
Edwin Way Teale’s work received numerous awards, among them the John Burroughs Medal (1943) and the Pulitzer Prize (1966, for WanderingThroughWinter). He received the Ecology Award from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 1975 and the Conservation Medal from the New England Wildflower Society in the same year. He was awarded several honorary degrees.
Teale belonged to a variety of organizations that reflected the range of his interests. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, the National Audubon Society, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Royal Photographic Society, and the New York Entomological Society (of which he was president in 1944). He was a long-time member of the Thoreau Society, serving as its president in 1958.
Drawn to Concord by his interest in Thoreau as a naturalist and writer and by involvement in the Thoreau Society, Edwin Way Teale was both patron and friend of the Concord Free Public Library.
Edwin Way Teale died on Oct. 18, 1980, in Norwich, Conn. He left Trail Wood, his 1806-built Hampton, Conn., farmhouse with over 150 acres of land, to the Connecticut Audubon Society, ultimately to be converted into a sanctuary. He left the major portion of his personal papers to the University of Connecticut, the portion relating to Thoreau and Concord to the Concord Free Public Library.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Papers include correspondence (1941-1975) primarily reflecting Teale’s involvement in the Thoreau Society (with major sequences from Raymond Adams, Francis H. Allen, Theodore Bailey, Walter Harding, Ira Hoover, Gladys Hosmer, Leonard F. Kleinfeld, Roland Wells Robbins, and Ruth Wheeler); research notes and working papers accumulated in preparing publications, lectures, and seminars (most of this material organized and arranged by Teale himself); manuscript notebooks; scrapbooks compiled by Teale (incorporating correspondence, clippings, book jackets, and promotional material relating to two of his books and one lecture); pictorial material (but only a few photographs by Teale); reprints; library and museum publications (including exhibition catalogs, mailings relating to exhibitions and commemorative events, brochures, and descriptions of library and museum collections relating to Concord subjects); mailings from various organizations (New York Thoreau Fellowship, the Rochester Chapter of the Thoreau Society, the Emerson Society, the Roxbury Burroughs Club, the National Audubon Society, the Academy of Political Science, and the American Polar Society); publishers’ prospectuses and advertisements for books on Thoreau and Concord by authors other than Edwin Way Teale; Concord tourist information; ephemera (for example, a cancelled 1944 check for membership in the Thoreau Society); galley proofs for two of Teale’s books (Walden, 1946, and Thoughts of Thoreau, 1962); clippings (some about Concord, Thoreau, Walden Pond, and the Thoreau Society, some about Teale’s writings); an extensive body of material generated by the Thoreau Society between 1941 and 1976 (announcements, committee reports, etc., from 1941 to 1965, Bulletins from 1941 to 1965, and Booklets from 1942 to 1976); and 108 printed items from Teale’s personal library (many inscribed and heavily annotated).
SOURCE OF ACQUISITION: The papers came to the Concord Free Public Library as a bequest in 1981. As specified in Edwin Way Teale’s will of Sept., 1980, the bequest includes his "collection of Henry Thoreau books, letters, correspondence, momentos [sic] and any other material dealing with Henry Thoreau, all ... material dealing with Ralph Waldo Emerson and all other material ... dealing with or relating to Concord, Massachusetts."
ASSOCIATED MATERIALS: The major, non-Thoreau- and Concord-related portion of Edwin Way Teale’s papers were bequeathed to the University of Connecticut (Storrs). The records of the Thoreau Society are included in the Thoreau Society Archives and Collections.
NOTES/COMMENTS: The clippings in the papers have been photocopied for patron use. Several items in the Teale bequest (as noted in container list) were transferred to other of the Library’s Special Collections before the papers were processed for the Vault Collection.
