VAULT B5, UNIT 19
EXTENT: 341 slides.
ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT: Organized into three series: I. Concord people, places, and events, 1947-1981, plus undated; II. Non-Concord images (Massachusetts and Pennsylvania): Landscapes and structures, 1947-1968 plus undated; III. Images of unidentified locations, 1948-1954, plus undated.
Concord slides have been divided into the following categories: people (arranged alphabetically by last name), general landscapes (arranged chronologically), Minute Man National Park (arranged chronologically), street scenes (arranged chronologically), cemeteries and churches (arranged chronologically), structures (arranged alphabetically by name), and events (arranged by event and then within each event chronologically).
Slides from other towns in Massachusetts are arranged alphabetically by town name, with the five slides from Pennsylvania grouped together at the end of the series.
The 11 slides of unidentified locations are arranged chronologically.
BIOGRAPHY: Roland Wells Robbins (1908-1987) was a self-styled Thoreauvian and “Pick and Shovel Historian.” With only a high school education, he developed his interests in New England history and archeology into a career excavating and restoring historic sites and lecturing on his work.
Robbins was born on March 21, 1908 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He dropped out of high school and worked a series of odd jobs in Massachusetts and Vermont during the Depression. He settled in Lincoln, Massachusetts in 1934 and began researching local history as a hobby. In 1945 he published The Story of the Minute Man, a history of the Minute Man statue in Concord, and began excavations at Walden Pond to locate the site of Thoreau’s cabin. He delivered his first lecture to The Thoreau Society in 1946 and published Discovery at Walden in 1947, both about his work at Walden Pond.
After excavating the foundation of Thoreau’s Walden cabin, Robbins went on to research and excavate over 60 sites, including sites related to the iron industry in America (most notably the Saugus Iron Works) and the homes of important figures in American history (for example, the John Alden House). Robbins was known for his meticulous recordkeeping and his ability to promote his work. As archeology became more professionalized, he was criticized for some of his techniques, particularly his use of heavy equipment and his focus on physical ruins rather than social and cultural history. He died in Lincoln on February 8, 1987.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Collection consists of images by Robbins of a range of subjects in Concord, Massachusetts, and of other (primarily Massachusetts) locations, exclusive of the photographs he took to document his professional work at various archeological sites. It includes 201 slides of people, places and events in Concord taken between 1948 and 1981. People pictured include Margaret Lothrop, Bill Towler and Ruth Wheeler. Places pictured include landscapes, Minute Man National Park, street scenes, cemeteries and churches, and structures. Events pictured include the 1947, 1959, and 1975 April 19th celebrations, the 1949 Memorial Day service (one slide only), the 1964 100th anniversary of Hawthorne’s death, and the 1970 “Fun Fair” for the Nesan (variously spelled by Robbins Neson, Nason) Fund. The collection also includes 129 non-Concord slides. Most of the images are landscapes taken between 1947 and 1968 in various Massachusetts locations (Acton, Arlington, Ayer, Boxford, Brockton, Carlisle, Charlemont, Groton, Harvard, Lexington, Lincoln, Middleton, Millers Falls, Mohawk Trail, Needham, Pepperell, Stoneham, Sturbridge, Sudbury, Townsend, Waltham, Webster, White Spot, Winchendon, Winchester). Five slides from Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania are included. 11 images of unidentified locations (mostly landscapes) are also included.
The collection includes 10 images of covered bridges (see Ayer, Boxford, Charlemont and Pepperell slides in Series II.). The collection also includes two images of Roland Robbins: I.7 and II.57.
SOURCE OF ACQUISITION: Gift of Jean Robbins Brown, January 2008.
ASSOCIATED COLLECTIONS: The Concord Free Public Library collections include extensive holdings of Herbert Wendell Gleason negatives once owned by Roland Wells Robbins (Robbins Collection of Herbert Wendell Gleason Photographic Negatives of Concord, Mass., and Robbins-Mills Collection of Herbert Wendell Gleason Photographic Negatives) and much documentation of Robbins’s promotion of the Gleason negatives. The Thoreau Society’s Roland Wells Robbins Collection at the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods consists of Robbins’ field notes, photographs, and other documentation from the Thoreau site and from other excavated and restored historic sites throughout the eastern United States.
RESTRICTIONS ON ACCESS AND USE: Slides may be viewed only under the supervision of Special Collections staff. Copy images may be made for a fee by arrangement with Special Collections, but not by the researcher. Patrons may not bring personal equipment for making copy images into the reading room. Requests for permission to use images in publication must be made in writing to the Curator of Special Collections, William Munroe Special Collections, CFPL.
NOTES/COMMENTS: Accessioned January 16, 2008; AMC 152. The captions are transcribed as they appeared on the slides. The photo notes referred to in some of the captions are not part of the collection.
