EXTENT: 40 items.

ORGANIZATION: Organized in two series. SERIES I: General; SERIES II: Bills. Records in each series arranged chronologically.

HISTORY: Committee appointed to make recommendations on the widening of Main Street, Concord, Mass., on the south side, largely in response to William Munroe’s plan to build a library for the town at the intersection of Main Street and Sudbury Road. Munroe planned the project and arrived at an estimate ($5,000). The Middlesex County Commissioners agreed to pay 2/5 of the cost; another 1/5 was to be raised through private subscriptions, and the remaining 2/5 to be appropriated from municipal taxes. The committee of three consisted of Frederic Hudson, Reuben N. Rice, and Henry F. Smith. The printed municipal report for 1871-1872 includes their report.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The General series includes agreements made by property owners to allow the town to widen the road over sections of their land, William Munroe’s report on the estimated cost of the project, correspondence from the Middlesex County Commissioners, a list of subscribers donating money for the project, and the Committee’s financial reports to the Selectmen; the Bills (1872) series includes receipted bills for costs related to the widening of the road and a summary statement of cash paid out.
