ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGMENT: Two series: I. School compositions, 1873; II. Journals, 1878-1905 .

biography:  Grocer of Concord, Mass., (b. Mar. 29, 1858 - d. Feb. 13, 1906).  Son of Silas Merriam Holden (b. Acton, Mass.) and Sarah Watson Prentiss Holden (b. Lexington, Mass.); brother of Franklin Waldo Holden.  Silas Herbert Holden’s pastimes included bird watching and hunting.


Scope and Content: Papers, 1873-1905, include four school compositions (all 1873) and eight journal volumes (1878-1905).  Journal entries focus primarily on bird sightings and shooting expeditions, with some reference to weather and other observations of nature.
