History:
Real estate development company in Concord, Mass.  Incorporated in 1828, the company had been conducting business since 1826.  Incorporators included Nehemiah Ball, John Keyes, Ephraim Merriam, Abel Moore, and Daniel Shattuck (who served as treasurer).  Starting out with $20,000 capital, the company bought up land in the vicinity of the mill dam in the center of Concord, drained the millpond, widened the road, tore down old and constructed new store buildings, collected rent from storekeepers, and sold lots upon which individuals could put up their own buildings.  The construction of the Concord Bank and Middlesex Mutual Fire Insurance Company building (1832) was one significant result of the Mill Dam Company’s activity in Concord’s business district.

Scope and Content: Records (1826-1854) include the following materials: minutes of meetings, 1835; bylaws, [1835]; reports of Building Committee and of committee appointed to audit Building Committee, 1837; annual reports of Treasurer (Daniel Shattuck), 1838-1842; summary statements of accounts and finances, 1826-1843; individual bills and accounts (most receipted as paid), 1826-1843 (with one promissory note, Daniel Shattuck to Nathan Brooks, included at the end of sequence); statements of rents due and received, 1837-1841; documents relating to stock and stockholders of company, 1826-1838; statement by Nathan Brooks that deed was drawn up releasing the “right of flowing,” 1826; bond, Nehemiah Ball to company, 1836, relating to mortgage on property conveyed by him to company; lease 1836; deed of land from Mill Dam Company to Daniel Shattuck, 1853, recorded in Cambridge 1854; property appraisal (undated).
