The residence in Concord of important nineteenth-century authors has favored the development of the Concord Free Public Library as a major archive of New England Transcendentalism.  Local people who knew the Concord authors personally considered this public library an appropriate repository for books, diaries, letters, ephemera, and images reflecting the place of these luminaries in town life.  Later, descendants of early donors naturally turned here when seeking a good home for family papers.  This letter comes from a collection of letters to William Torrey Harris, given to the library in the 1950s by his daughter Edith Davidson Harris.

Sanborn writes about Harris’s honorarium for lecturing at the Concord School of Philosophy in 1879.
