Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card stock) from the CFPL Photofile. Purchased from Up-Country Letters, 2007. This photograph of an elderly Bronson Alcott was reproduced from a commercially issued carte de visite (a compact, popular nineteenth-century portrait format). A recent Concord Free Public Library purchase, the original card dates from the 1870s. Even though the library has well-established photographic collections documenting the Concord authors and their world, images lacking from its holdings still turn up from time to time and are acquired when available and affordable.
