Newton’s Cabot is from the Newton/Emerson Collection (part of the CFPL Concord Authors Collection). Gift of Edith Emerson Forbes and Edward Waldo Emerson, 1918. An engraved portrait of Orestes Brownson—editor of the Boston Quarterly Review and sometime defender and frequent critic of Transcendentalism—from William Taylor Newton’s copy of the Emerson biography by James Elliot Cabot (Emerson’s sanctioned biographer and literary executor). Published in two volumes, Cabot’s biography consists of four volumes as extra-illustrated by Newton.
