The first issue in the first of four bound volumes of William Taylor Newton’s complete copy of The Dial, with wrappers retained in the binding. The full set is from the Newton/Emerson Collection (part of the CFPL Concord Authors Collection). Gift of Edith Emerson Forbes and Edward Waldo Emerson, 1918. The Transcendental periodical The Dial was published between 1840 and 1844. Margaret Fuller initially edited the magazine; Emerson took over from her in 1842. Although eagerly read by Emerson and his associates in radical thought and reform activism, The Dial failed to attract enough subscribers for financial viability.
