Ralph Waldo Emerson's October 12, 1862 lecture at the Boston Music Hall in response to Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for November, 1862, was reprinted in the Commonwealth (a Boston antislavery newspaper) for November 15, 1862, and later collected in Emerson's Miscellanies (1884).
