ALS, Garrison to Brooks, 1863

22. William Lloyd Garrison.
Letter to Mary Merrick Brooks, Boston, July 30, 1863.
From Nathan Brooks Papers, CFPL Vault Collection.

This letter reflects the personal esteem in which Mary Merrick Brooks was held by William Lloyd Garrison—editor and publisher of the Liberator, who founded the New England Antislavery Society in 1832 and helped to found the American Antislavery Society in 1833.  Garrison regrets having been out when Mrs. Brooks called at his house, thanks her for her contribution "to help relieve the necessities for the colored suffering poor," at her suggestion agrees to write a mutual acquaintance regarding his use of wine, and offers his sympathy over the illness of her husband.  (Nathan Brooks died less than five months after this letter was written.)
