BIOGRAPHY: Forester and environmentalist. Founder in 1980 and director until 1993 of Walden Forever Wild, a Concord, Mass., organization devoted to turning Walden Pond State reservation into a national or state sanctuary in memory of Henry David Thoreau in order to restrict public access and to protect Walden Pond and the surrounding area. Born Mary Elizabeth Pasco in Hartford, Conn., 1906. Graduate of University of Connecticut, 1935, later of Cornell. Nursery keeper. Plant researcher at University of Florida, Gainesville, during 1950s. Moved to Concord in 1958. Member of Thoreau Society. Curator of Thoreau Lyceum, 1967-1968. Founder of Thoreau Fellowship (Old Town, Maine). Died 2001

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Papers include: manuscript journals (23 volumes), 1932-1994, with index; printed articles, etc., by Mary Sherwood, 1953-1995; miscellaneous items, including printed Graduation Essays, Class of 1930, Hartford Public High School, and manuscript notes from readings; and printed articles about Mary Sherwood and her organizational involvements, 1975-1993. Journals include observations on plants, wildlife, geography, and weather, and references to Thoreau, Walden Pond, the Thoreau Society, the Thoreau Fellowship, and Walden Forever Wild.
