History: An almanac is a yearly calendar with astronomical information, weather forecasts, seasonal guidelines for farmers, political discussions, jokes, helpful tips, recipes, and games. Astronomical information includes setting and rising times of the sun and moon, eclipses, and tide levels. Many almanacs would include information about some events like festivals, fairs, and happenings in court. Because of differences in geographical location, each area required different almanacs due to different astronomical and event data. The uniqueness of each area’s data kept many small almanac publishers in business.

The first printed almanac was published in 1457 by Gutenberg. The first English printed almanac, The Sheapheard’s Kalendar, was translated from the French in 1497. An Almanac for New England for the year 1639 was the first American almanac, compiled by William Pierce and printed at Harvard University Press.

Almanacs in the 1600s were bestsellers and by the middle of the century over 400,000 were produced annually. Some notable almanac publishers include Benjamin Banneker, Robert Thomas, Nathaniel Ames, Isaiah Thomas, and Benjamin Franklin. Comic almanacs were popular as well, first with Poor Robin’s Almanack and also John Tulley’s comic almanac.

There are still many almanacs circulating, both in print and online. They cover a myriad of topics worldwide, including agriculture, business, economics, government, religion, science, technology, and sports.
