ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT: Organized in a single file, and arranged alphabetically by compiler, title or other filing word.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: An artificial collection of printed hymnals and songbooks, 1795-[1875], acquired mainly by gift, from multiple donors.  Consists primarily of Boston and New York imprints.

PROVENANCE:  A number of items in collection bear evidence of previous ownership (one item by Simon Brown, two by Susie M. Fowler of St. Louis, Missouri, one by Julia Lockwood and E.B. Rodman, three by members of the Philbrick family, one by Samuel Ripley of Waltham, and one by H.A. Wheeler).  For details, see item list, below.

SOURCES OF ACQUISITION:  As identified volume by volume in item list. 

NOTES/COMMENTS:  A number of items were assigned accession numbers as acquired (see item list for accession numbers and dates).  Some items were transferred from the semi-restricted Basement Collection to the CFPL Special Collections.
