ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT: Organized in a single file, arranged chronologically (for deeds, by date witnessed rather than date received or recorded in the registry).

BIOGRAPHY: The collection consists primarily of documents relating to Abel Hosmer and his descendants and heirs. The Hosmers were established in Concord with the arrival of James Hosmer, who was born in England in 1607 and sailed to America in 1635. James was one of the sixty-three settlers who were granted land in Concord in the 1637 settlement with the Indians. He and his wife Alice had two daughters and a son, Stephen, born in 1642 in Concord. Stephen married Abigail Wood, and one of their eight children was Stephen, born in 1680. Stephen and his wife, Prudence Billings, had nine children, including Josiah Hosmer, born in 1714 in Concord. Josiah married Hannah Wesson, and their fourth child of nine was Jesse, born in 1745 in Concord. Jesse married Ann Prescott. Their tenth and last child was Abel, born in 1796. Abel married Olive Prescott Davis, who gave birth to six children, including Prescott Hayward Hosmer, born in 1827 in Concord. Prescott married Julia Whitney, born in 1852. Edward Caiger was adopted as a youth into the Hosmer family after the death of his parents. The heir of his adoptive mother, Julia Hosmer of Concord, he came into possession of this collection of Hosmer deeds and papers.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection consists of property documents, primarily deeds, 1791-1931, relating to the Hosmer family of Concord, Mass. It also includes plot plans, mortgage documents, and a ship cargo insurance policy. The bulk of the deeds relate to Abel Hosmer.
