HISTORY: The Beede Swim and Fitness Center is open to residents of Concord and Carlisle. It incorporates four swimming pools and a fitness facility. The idea for the Beede Center was conceived in March of 1996 when Jack Clymer, the Trustee for the Alfred Sawyer Trust created in 1937, approached the Concord Board of Selectmen about the pending dissolution of the trust, which provided for a donation to the town for a “civic improvement.” A swimming facility was suggested. After some initial investigation into the feasibility of such a facility, the non-profit organization, C.C. Pools (Concord-Carlisle People Organized to Open a Local Swim Facility) was formed in March of 2000 for the specific purpose of building a swim and health facility for the use of the residents of Concord and Carlisle. C.C. Pools then contracted the Office of Michael Rosenfeld and Thoughtforms Corporation to construct the facility. The organization entered into legal negotiations with the Town of Concord and conducted a vigorous fundraising campaign to realize its goal. The completed Beede Swim and Health Center Facility was gifted to the Town of Concord in February of 2007. The final cost of the project was 10.8 million dollars, making it one of the largest gifts made privately to the town.
